The <em>Voice<\/em> fired him for taking liberties with the truth&#8211;for mixing reporting and <a href=\"http:\/\/riffcentral.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/holyt-shitt-its-good-friday.html\" target=\"_blank\">riffing<\/a> a little too ambiguously. <\/p>\n<p>The lesson: if you make stuff up and put it in a newspaper, make it obvious that you&#8217;re making stuff up. Case in point: Sylvester&#8217;s 2005 <em>Voice<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/arts\/0531,education7,66455,12.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> on college cheating methods. <\/p>\n<p>But wait! Apparently even that&#8217;s not enough. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/news\/nation\/20060302-1116-villagevoice-fabrications.html\" target=\"_blank\">reporting<\/a> last month on Sylvester&#8217;s pickup piece, AP writer David Caruso mentioned Sylvester&#8217;s cheating piece:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In an August story about cheating on college campuses, Sylvester described interviewing a student who spent $500,000 to have a multiplication table tattooed over his entire body; a Harvard Medical School graduate who cheated with Morse code; a Boston College junior named Simeon Criz who cheated using a specially designed deck of playing cards; and a Manhattan doctor named Noam Feldstein who delivers &quot;a hundred newborn babies each day.&quot;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Boston College said it had no record of a student named Simeon Criz. The board that licenses doctors in New York said it had no record of a physician named Noam Feldstein.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIn all fairness, I believe it was the AP that broke the story that <a href=\"http:\/\/modblog.bmezine.com\/entries\/200509081813.html\" target=\"_blank\">the guy in Prison Break<\/a> is an actor.<\/p>\n<p>(Oh, how relieved I would be to learn that Caruso and his editors were merely reenacting <a href=\"http:\/\/silverjacket.typepad.com\/blog\/2005\/04\/ivy_league_fool.html\" target=\"_blank\">this gag<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today I mentioned Nick Sylvester&#8217;s Village Voice article about pickup artists.
